The network will air the pilot Sept. 13 in a “Sunset on the Beach” red carpet gala beginning at 5 p.m. on the beach at Waikiki, with the public screening set for 7:30 p.m. Actors O’Loughlin, [Scott] Caan, Daniel Dae Kim, Grace Park, Taryn Manning and Jean Smart will be on hand, along with producers Lenkov, Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci.
Another private red carpet party will follow for invited guests at Nobu’s at the Waikiki Parc Hotel, hosted by chef Nobu Matsuhisa. The network premiere will be a week later, Sept. 20, with “Five-0” airing at 9 p.m. Mondays Hawaii time.

Work crews set stage for star-studded premiere of Hawaii Five-0

WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow) - In less than 24 hours, people in Hawaii will get the first look at the new Hawaii Five-0 and see its stars walking the red carpet. On Sunday, workers were busy setting up for Monday's premiere at Sunset on the Beach in Waikiki.

It takes quite a bit of muscle -- and an early morning wake-up call -- to transform a beach into the venue for a Hollywood-style premiere.

"The crew came at 5 o'clock (AM)," Janet Maduli, event coordinator, said. "They came down and they lay out, they smoothed out the whole sand behind me. They laid down the board walks. They put in the tents. Generators roll in right after that. We had your crew come in and set up."

That's right, our crew. Trucks and equipment arrived on site Sunday for Hawaii News Now's live coverage of the Hawaii Five-0 series premiere festivities.

"I'm going to be front row and center for the premiere tomorrow," Elika, a Diamond Head resident who declined to give her last name, said. "I'm looking so forward to it."

Workers will roll out two red carpets for the star-studded event.

The general public will fight for seating outside the barriers. Inside, crews will set up 400 seats for VIP guests. Governor Lingle is among those planning to attend.

"Given the show's origins and that the show films here and the great history of Hawaii Five-0 on these islands, it just makes so much sense to premiere it here," Chris Ender, CBS spokesperson, said.

The original series premiered as a two-hour movie on a Friday night in 1968, before settling in its regular time slot on Thursdays. It aired for 12 seasons.

"What do you remember about the original?" this reporter asked Matt Potts, Kapahulu resident.

"The original, mainly I remember the theme song -- dah, dah, dah, dah, dah, dah," Potts hummed. "So that really sticks in your head."

Cast and crew for the reinvented series hope the dramatic action, some comedy and gorgeous scenery will draw viewers in as well.

"I hope it works for them," Steve Havel, Kapahulu resident, said. "I hope it's not like a sequel to a movie where the original is always better, but we'll see how it goes."

We also got a view of the prep work from the 21st floor of the Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel. With Diamond Head as his backdrop, meteorologist Guy Hagi will provide weather reports during our live coverage from that location.

Workers tested the lights and the big screen, as the sun set at Waikiki Beach.

"There is no other venue in the world like this one," Maduli said.

The rest of the country will see the show on September 20th. The first episode of the original Hawaii Five-0 aired on that date 42 years ago.

Ich finde es könnte genausogut ein Strand auf Mallorca sein Vielleicht habe ich einfach falsche Vorstellungen von Hawaii.

Mann, was wär ich da gerne dabei! Allein schon die Bilder des Aufbaus, die Grösse, und dann der Strand, die Palmen, das Meer.... haaach.

Morgens um sechs, meine Güte, da bin ich noch im Nimmerland. Wär aber schon voll cool, das über den Stream live mitzukriegen, zumindest ein bisschen davon. Als wär man dabei.

Book 'em, Danno: Waikiki hosts premiere of Hawaii Five-0

From the monster North Shore wave and hip-swiveling dancer showcased in its staccato opening theme song to star Jack Lord's sculpted hairdo and unerring ability to keep paradise safe, the cop drama Hawaii 5-0 played a major role in promoting tourism to the Aloha State during its 1968 to 1980 run.

Tonight, with Diamond Head and a setting sun as a backdrop, CBS will treat an estimated 7,000 tourists and kama'ainas (locals) to a free beach front premiere of its "reboot" of the original show. (If you can't make the Sunset on the Beach screening at Kuhio Beach Park, the show airs nationally on Sept. 20 - the same day its predecessor launched 42 years ago.)

The pilot of the contemporary version, with Alex O'Loughlin as Honolulu police detective Steve McGarrett, Scott Caan as Danny "Danno" Williams, Daniel Dae Kim as Chin Ho Kelly and Grace Park as a female incarnation of Kono Kalakaua, is a lot lighter on postcard scenery than on hyperkinetic action sequences.

"We didn't want to do the obvious palm trees and beaches," executive producer Peter Lenkov told me last week while sipping a mai tai on the iconic oceanfront terrace of Waikiki's Halekulani hotel. But like the original, the new Hawaii Five-O will feature Oahu as a "co-star of the show, " he promises.

Among the celebrities attending tonight's red carpet premiere will be original cast member Al Harrington, 74, a Honolulu actor and entertainer who played Det. Ben Kokua for the first four seasons. While he wishes the newcomers well, Harrington says they'll have big flip-flops to fill: The '70s classic "was a launching pad to the new Hawaii" that did a good job of portraying a multicultural society without many "little natives being patted on the head" stereotypes, he says.
